performance of maintenance functions to specific maintenance categories.

Maintenance Functions:
a.
Inspect: To determine the serviceability of an item by comparing its
physical, mechanical and/or electrical characteristics with established
standards through examination.
b. Test: T o v e r i f y s e r v i c e a b i l i t y a n d d e t e c t i n c i p i e n t f a i l u r e s b y
measuring mechanical or electrical characteristics of an item and
comparing those characteristics with prescribed standards.
Service:
Operations required periodically to keep an item in proper

operating condition, i.e., to clean (decontaminate), to preserve, to drain,
air supplies.
d. A d j u s t :
To maintain, w i t h i n p r e s c r i b e d L i m i t s , b y b r i n g i n g i n t o
proper or exact position, or by setting the operating characteristics to
specified parameters.
e. A l i g n : T o a d j u s t s p e c i f i e d v a r i a b l e e l e m e n t s o f a n i t e m t o b r i n g
about optimum or desired performance.

Calibrate: To determine and cause corrections to be made or to be
adjusted on instruments or test measuring and diagnostic equipment used in
precision measurement.
Consists of comparisons of two instruments, one of
which is a certified standard of known accuracy, to detect and adjust any
discrepancy in the accuracy of the instrument being compared,

actions to restore serviceability to an item by correcting specific damage,
f a u l t , malfunction, or failure in a part, subassembly, module (component or
assembly), end item, or system.
